Hey, we grew up in an era where we were supposed to be "seen and not heard." By the power vested in me as as the POTHHSCO1964 (I know you can figure out what that acronmy stands for), we are "officially" out of that era. I'd like to hear from each and everyone of our classmates...and our guests. You can say "Hi." or "I am still alive," or whatever you want to say to all of us. And if you do make a comment and don't say it the way you wanted to say it, you can always go back and edit whatever you said! I do it all the time...ok, to be precise, I edit what I say "everytime" and maybe even more than once. Whatever you say here...stays here (like in Carol City or whatever that city is that keeps things to themselves). All of us will be able to keep our jobs at Walmart greeting customers even though we might say something on our website that could be interpreted as opinionated. If you see the wording changed the next time you read this, you'll know that Walmart has counseled me about my future employment with them!

Buddy, so sorry to hear this.  You stay strong during this test of your faith.  All of your family and friends join you on their knees praying for you and your wife.  Take care of her while you can and God will take care of her after.

Hey Buddy…that’s the only name I remember you by. I also remember that you always brought fun into high school with your broad smile and outward lighthearted nature…even when the rest of us might have been down in the dumps. Whatever you might have said when you were with classmates you made us laugh with you…and out loud!

I know one of your homes is in the Ormond Beach area…you have lots of classmates who live in the Ormond Beach area. Let me know the next time you and your wife will be in town and we’ll roundup as many classmates as we can for lunch or and early dinner. I believe we can get you and your wife back up on your feet…at least for a little while.  In the meantime, especially at our ages, all of our classmates empathize with what you and your wife and your entire family are going through and we are here to do whatever we can to support both of you. Vinny

On the size of our school ... Bonnie and I have been married over 50 years. We met just before graduation 55 years ago. I never was in a class with her ... do not ever remember seeing her ... we both worked in the office ... she as a PBX operator and me in the book store.Yes ...our class was big!

On the issue of Sports ... the idea of Summer Football's two a day workouts was to kill you ... 100 F and 100 percent humidity ... eating a lot of dust as we ran and ran ... that was also the days of no water breaks ... it is a wonder I did not die, The idea was to widdle the herd down to a manageable group.

Changing classes ... we went out into the street to get to TV classes ...

Have never met anyone that had classes that big ... actually made me feel a little special when I tell others about the size of our school .. Pride.

Buddy and Tom Sayers in H F McDonalds science class................I didn't learn any science but I did learn that I personally thought  Buddy and Tom would end up comics. I sat next to Buddy and Tom and what a hoot. I was also lucky to be at the same desk with Judy Emmons and behind Cora Brown and Deidra Williams (prom date...had to beg) Did not learn science but REALLY enjoyed that class.

Buddy I live in Ormond beach and am lucky enough to have a mini reunion in March (thanks to Vinny the word is out) Buddy you would be supprised how many of our classmates live in central Fla. Vinny is the magnet that attracts us to these gatherings........The March reunion is set in concrete but Vinny does to town several other time during the year. all we need is a second date and we can be on for another gathering.

I just wanted to respond to several messages here.  First, to Vince, I think it was quite a wonderful experience growing up when we did. I never felt it was a disadvantage going to a large school, in fact, the more the merrier!  We had such great school spirit and such support from the community.  I went to Westview and the class right after me was the last to go to Hialeah since Carol City oppened the following year.  I would have been heartbroken if I couldn't go to Hialeah, because like Jennifer I was a big fan.  In Jr. High I had a friend whose older sister went to Hialeah and we would sometimes meet her at the bus stop after school.  I would see all the kids getting off the bus with their spirit tags, shakers and red and blue spirit dolls and it all seemed so exciting to me.  I couldn't wait to go there!  Fortunately, for me I also met my future husband there.  My mom used to say love is a matter of chance and geography and I guess she was right.

To Buddy, I just wanted to say that I remember you also as being hilarious!  I also want to say how sorry I am to hear about your wife.  I know how difficult it is to watch someone go through cancer as my sister is doing that now and has been for the last two years.  My heart goes out to both of you and I will be praying for God to give you strength and consolation during this difficult time.

Ray, your stories always seem to amaze me, and I thank you and all who have served our country.  Thank you for keeping us updated.  I always enjoy your comments and photos.

I picked up this brochure while on our tour of HHS during our 50ish Reunion last May. When you look at it, you might say to yourself: "I don't recognize any of those pictures of the school," and you would be correct. The school added a three story east wing that has underground covered parking for the teachers: the new administrative area and more classrooms are located above the parking...hence the steps going up. And if you don't remember those Royal Palm trees, again you are correct. If you look at page 5 in our senior yearbook, you will find this same area with only a few trees at the end of the pathway. And to the right of the sidewalk, where it seems that the classrooms are closer than they used to be (south side), they definitely are closer. I believe since we left they filled in much of the open space with classrooms . At some point, they added the two rows of Royal Palms...I bet they were only 8 or 10 feet tall when they were planted!

William (Bill) Stephens. I'm new to this post. I would like to know if our school seal is still in the floor. I remember dodging it on the way to class

Bill, this was taken in 2014.

During our time at HHS, we were simply told not to walk on the seal...and we complied. At some point, students must have felt it was silly to have to walk around the seal and began walking over it. To preserve the seal, someone obviously decided to chain it off. The seal still looks great; however, the chains and stancheons look terrible. Maybe someone has a photo that better shows the larger area around the seal and will post it for all of us to see?

Here's a better photo of the seal taken during our 50ish Reunion:

Many of us that went to Filer were forewarned about walking on the H H seal...........seniors with toothbrushs hanging out waiting for a unsuspecting under class person who didn't know the tradition and ended up cleaning off their footprint with  a toothbrush. Some traditions should remain.

Does anyone remember the day when 4 or so football players picked up Mr. Besue's (sp?) Volkswagon and carried it in the hall next to the seal?

From my 1963 yearbook. We really knew how to walk around that seal. Pretty cool.

Filer dress code LOL white tee shirt, black pants and patent leather shoes............If you were REALLY cool you had a Cushman Eagle. a student named Sunny comes to mind, probably 17 and still in the 9th grade. I remember him after school dressed as above but smokes roled up in his sleve, and off on his Cushman!!

The 2 students I remember with Cushman Eagles were Wally Lake and Billy Deal. Later on (maybe at HHS) Micky Lasher and Buddy VanAuken had brand new ones. Really neat for the times.

I wasn’t that cool ,I had a Vespa from Sears and Roebuck which I bought at Sears  automotive for $ 330 dollars at Northside shopping center N.W. 27 Ave & 79 St across the street from Funland Park. I can’t remember the name of the drive in that was on the corner, it was torn down and a Royal Castle was built in its place.

That is really a Rad Cushman Eagle, my brother had a blue one with dual exhausts.

James, FRANK N BUN was the drive in “Car Hop” restaurant. And, we used to ride the Wild Mouse at FUNLAND. Those were the days my friend. Vespa was a pretty cool ride.
