He graduated from Hialeah High School in Hialeah, Florida; Jackson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Miami in Miami, Florida; and Wesley School of Anesthesia in Wichita, Kansas.

He was often seen around town on one of his Harleys. Johnson was a nurse anesthetist at Columbia Memorial Hospital for more than 30 years. Despite the stress and long hours, he truly loved his job. After retiring, Johnson was married to Laura Lynn McEnulty, and is survived by stepchildren Stephanie (Curtis) Olds and Brian McEnulty (Katie) and grandson Colin. They later divorced.
