Mike was a good friend and lived down the street from my husband, Tim.  He was a talented dancer and always had a smile on his face. Mike was in the Coast Guard and was stationed in New York.  He died under mysterious circumstances while on patrol in New York harbor in January of "67 or "68.  The official report was that he fell overboard, though no one on board saw or heard him.  His body was not recovered for several months, and was returned to Miami for burial.  It was a very tragic event and his mother never accepted his death.

When I was flying for Pan Am, I found myself on a trip with Michael's father who was a Purser on my flight. He told me all about this mysterious and unexplained death. He had congressmen trying to get to the sealed reports and was unable to get anything done. He was a broken man convinced he and his wife had been provided with false documents. Like Benghazi, those who served with Michael that night were transferred and never available to talk with family representatives including men they knew to be his friends.

Jennifer, you are correct.  Both Mr. and Mrs. Perez went to their graves not knowing what really happened to their son.  Because of the condition of the body when it was found, no sight identification was possible.  Supposedly, he was identified by dental records, but both of the Perezes were suspicious that the body that was returned to them was really his.  At one point I think they got an attorney and had the body exhumed, but the test results were inconclusive.  I think Mr. Perez eventually accepted that their son was dead, but Mrs. Perez always thought that one day he would come home.

You may be correct, Gary, but Tim and I weren't married until March of '66, and I thought it was after we moved away.  I don't remember being at the funeral but maybe that was because it was months after he disappeared that the body was found and we would have been living in Tennessee then.  No matter, it was such a tragedy and ruined the lives of his family.  God Bless you and Sharon, too, and I hope we get to see each other again.

Mike was a good fried of mine.  We attended 'cotillion' together in Miami Springs.

Do any of you recall that?  I was so surprised to hear of his death and, like you all,

think it was extremely suspicious.  If anyone has info, please update me.
