Jimmie Ruth Songer

She was born in LaGrange, Georgia to the late Dewey and Gertrude Cantrell on May 10, 1930. Siblings Nina Powers and William (Jr) Cantrell are deceased.

Jimmie graduated from Miami Edison in 1947. In 1949 she married Rush Songer, a Naval aviator who was killed while flying a mission in South Carolina in 1950.

She subsequently enrolled in Physical Education at David Lipscomb College in Nashville. After three years, she transferred to University of Miami graduating in 1955 with a BED. She taught at Coral Gables for two years and went back to UM for her Masters in 1957. After teaching three years at Palmetto, she transferred to Hialeah where she taught Physical Education and coached several sports for 25 years. After retiring in 1985, she continued to officiate volleyball and softball.

Jimmie was an accomplished athlete at Edison and as an adult played volleyball, basketball and softball on teams that competed in Florida, Bahamas and Jamaica as well as national tournaments.

Jimmie was a member of the Hialeah Church of Christ and until health became an issue, conducted many competitions for members and tail-gating at football and baseball.

She was an active member of Delta Psi Kappa, an organization that supports local female high school athletes with scholarships and recognition of their athletic accomplishments.

With longtime companion, Russie Tighe, they spent summers camping the US and Canada. In 1969, they purchased a VW camper in Germany and spent 56 days camping Europe. Brought the VW back to the US and travelled in it until purchasing a RV in 1976. Russie's 3 nephews and sometimes their parents continued to have great camping trips.

They both loved their dogs and sometimes with a cat, became fellow travelers.

They also toured Antarctica, Australia, Egypt, Africa and Great Britain.

Russie and Jimmie were Dolphin season ticket holders since 1970 and avid UM fans with season tickets since 1967.

A service will be held at Vista Memorial Gardens in Miami Lakes, with the date and time TBD.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Delta Psi Kappa. Mail to Wendy Wood, treasurer, at 7711 NW 4th Street, Pembroke Pines FL 33024.

She wax one of the best. She will surely be missed. I passed her house everyday on the way to school. She liked working in her yard.

She was one of my favorite teachers. She was very close friends with my parents. She and my Mom both went to Edison(a few years apart). She was instrumental in helping my parents when they started bowling as a PE class, and also approved as a varsity sport. I loved her accent. RIP, dear Mrs Songer.

Ms. Songer was not my teacher but I remember her well.  She was friends with Quinn Kelly, my teacher and cheerleading coach.  She was always very pleasant and friendly.  My sister Katie, class of 1970, was one of her students and she was Katie's favorite teacher.  We saw her at the "64 50th reunion and spoke with her for awhile.  She was as nice as ever, and seemed pleased to see us.  My deepest condolences go to her friends and loved ones.  She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
